Clinch Mountain District Predictions for 2007-2008

Football - The rivalry is back between the Bearcats and the Devils. The surprise of the district: Lee County. Great bunch of athletes getting ready to come through the programs at Lee County. I believe it could be a dogfight between the top 4 teams mentioned here in this ranking.

    1. Virginia High
    2. Gate City
    3. Lee County
    4. Lebanon
    5. John Battle

Volleyball - Led by Head Coach Holly Rolen, who played under the always impressive Susie Toomey at King College, the Lady Bearcats will make waves and create a new tradition in Bristol where volleyball is concerned. Just like their coach, expect the Bearcats to be ultra-competitive every single year. The Lady Trojans are always a perennial power in Region C so look for the Virginia side of Bristol to be a battle for the district championship. Gate City, always a power in Region D, will be going through a youth movement in the girls programs, but should still be very competitive. The top 3 spots should be up for grabs.

    1. Virginia High
    2. John Battle
    3. Gate City
    4. Lee County
    5. Lebanon

Boys Basketball - The Blue Devils will return every single player next year, with the exception of this years senior, Abram Arwood. The Blue Devils, depending on the outcome of their season this year, will either be hungry for more or they will settle for who they are. It is a huge choice that could determine the future of a team who has the capability to go all the way to Richmond and win the whole thing if they want to. They are this good... but do they know it?
Virginia High is a program on the upswing and Coach Mitchell will once again be in the Group A ranks where he was the former coach of the John Battle Trojans.... leading them to a Group A State Runnerup finish with leadership from Jon Odum and Jimmy Gobble (now with the Kansas City Royals).

    1. Gate City
    2. Virginia High
    3. Lebanon
    4. Lee County
    5. John Battle

Girls Basketball - Barry Reed has been the leader of a perennial Top 10 Group AA power in the Lady Bearcats for some time now and it doesnt look like nothing is about to change none to soon. Gate City's reign on the LPD will be over and they will have a new nemesis in Virginia High who should bring about a rivalry such as they have had with Robin Dotson's Lady Indians the past few years. Lee County is a huge question because unknown to some people, the athletes are starting to filter in some again at Lee County and the Lady Generals have been know to give Reed's Bearcats fits in the defunct Highlands. Should be an interesting year for the Top 3 spots in the Clinch Mountain.

    1. Virginia High
    2. Lee County
    3. Gate City
    4. Lebanon
    5. John Battle

Baseball - If you shook a district champion out of a bag here... it would be hard to say who would fall out first. Virginia High is the perennial Group AA Region IV power, John Battle is the perennial Group A Region C power, and Gate City is the perennial Group A Region D power... so you look at this and you can tell that this will be the most competitive sport and probably the best Group A baseball district in the state... It will be a dogfight for the #1 slot.. enough said.

    1. Virginia High
    2. Gate City
    3. John Battle
    4. Lebanon
    5. Lee County

Softball - Gate City, a perennial power and state championship contender in Group A will be losing a huge nucleus of players after this year. Virginia High should be the odds on favorite and of course just like the boys programs.. look for John Battle to also be in the hunt.

    1. Virginia High
    2. Gate City
    3. John Battle
    4. Lebanon
    5. Lee County

    Football

    1-VH
    2-GC
    3-Leb
    4-Lee
    5-JB

VH/GC is almost a toss up, as is Leb/Lee, but VH/GC are still heads and shoulders above Leb/Lee...I think "home field advantage" will likely determine who finishes higher between VH/GC and Leb/Lee...JB is light years behind all four...
